I really didn't think so, but am wondering if you ever do get to sit in.
There are certain "open mic" styled nights where asking to sit in is appropriate, otherwise its a bit of an imposition on the band. They usually work hard in advance to put their set together (even if there are elements of improv) and having an unknown player can make some folks nervous. People do it to us, and in the past we've allowed it, to mixed results. That said, in traditional jazz circles where people are playing the standards, its not so unusual to ask to sit in - but you better know your stuff!
