The Tube

I've gotten quite familiar with the tube at this point and for the
most part I thinks its a good system. Luckily I dont use it for my
daily commute to work as it gets really crowded and stuffy. Most
Londoners complain about that aspect of it - and that it closes too
early (around midnight). But for most jaunts its worked well for me. I
have an Oyster card that I prepay which gets me everywhere within
zones 1&2 (central London) for about $3 a trip.

Do they still have the old wooden escalators or are they all gone? There were still a few left when I was there in 1989.

Hey Dallas, I don't think I've seen anything wooden in the tube. What I've seen was all metal or tile.

I'll ask some folks in my office if they know of any still around.

Yeah- they had a BIG fire way back when and the smoke basically suffocated anyone not near a street exit. Thus I'm sure putting anything wooden down there isn't something they want to repeat. I think there were maybe 2 wooden escalators left in the whole system. Likely they have been replaced.
